WORSHIP

Messy Church

At a Messy Church gathering, people of every generation experience God’s love through hands-on creativity, joyful worship, and the gift of shared meals. It’s church—but not what you’re used to.

What Messy Church Is:

  • A Fresh Expression of Church
Rooted in Christian tradition, Messy Church offers a welcoming, creative space for all ages to encounter God.
  • Intergenerational
Children, teens, and adults explore faith side by side, building relationships across generations.
  • Creative and Hands-On
Activities, crafts, games, and storytelling make Bible truths tangible and memorable.
  • Celebratory
Gatherings include short, accessible worship with singing, prayer, and reflection that center us in Christ.
  • Welcoming
Sharing food and fellowship around the table creates belonging and community for everyone.
  • Authentic and Real
Messy Church reflects everyday life—imperfect, playful, and open to the Spirit moving in unexpected ways.

What Messy Church Is NOT:

  • Not a Traditional Church Service
Messy Church offers an alternative format to Sunday mornings, often meeting on a different day or time.
  • Not a Craft Club
While crafts are part of the fun, they are a tool for exploring faith, not the main purpose.
  • Not a Sunday School for Children
Messy Church is intentionally intergenerational—children, teens, adults, and elders participate and grow together.
  • Not a Pathway to Sundays
Messy Church is not simply a stepping stone to traditional worship. It stands as a complete and valid expression of church in its own right.
  • Not a Perfect, Ordered Event
The “messy” name reflects the reality of life—relaxed, playful, creative, and open to the Spirit’s work.

Why Messy Church?

  • Makes faith accessible and engaging for all ages
  • Builds relationships across generations
  • Offers a safe space for those outside traditional church
  • Provides a simple rhythm as monthly gatherings provide connection without weekly commitment
  • Creates a community of joy and belonging

Messy Church Values:

Messy Church is not a stepping stone into existing congregations, nor is it a church plant, but it is a congregation in its own right.

Messy Church is ecumenical and seeks to work with all Christian churches.

At the heart of every Messy Church gathering are values that shape who we are and how we live out our faith together. These values remind us that Messy Church is more than crafts, songs, or meals. It’s a way of being church that welcomes all ages, celebrates God’s creativity and joy, and centers us in Christ’s transforming love.

Rooted in hospitality and shared life, these values guide every Messy Church community around the world.

Connected to a Global Community:

Messy Church USA is part of the vibrant and growing global Messy Church movement, which connects tens of thousands of people around the world in a shared commitment to Christ-centered, all-ages, hands-on worship.

We are one family—linked through creativity, hospitality, and celebration—partnering across oceans and neighborhoods alike. Within the United States, churches of all sizes and denominations are building community through Messy Church, learning from one another, sharing stories and resources, and joining in a wider web of encouragement and support.

Whether you’re in a big city or a small town, you’re not alone in this journey—we’re all part of something much bigger.

            CELEBRATION
The Bible verse Micah 6:6-8 is part of a larger conversation in which God expresses frustration and disappointment with how people have turned away from God's ways.
What might God be asking of us?  Does it feel like a burden or a gift?
What does justice look like/feel like to you?  What does kindness look like/feel like to you?
What about “walking humbly with God”?
Is there any area of injustice you might see in your community right now?

Hope to see you there!
Remember, Messy Church is multi-generational, and everyone is encouraged to try it!  You’ll love it!
